Different Types Of Marine Insurance And Insurance Policies

Ships are lost at sea every year. With the trend of mega-ships that transport large stacks of containers across the ocean, ocean-going cargo containers have grown in size.

The World Shipping Council investigates how many ships are lost at sea each year. The 2014 update shows that the number of cargo containers lost at sea has increased significantly since the 2011 survey.

Studies conducted in 2011, 2012 and 2013 estimated that an average of 733 containers were lost at sea in all three years, excluding disaster situations.

The 733 shipping containers lost at sea in the period 2011-2013 is more than double the number of containers lost at sea in the previous period 2008-2010.

According to a 2011 survey, the World Shipping Council estimated that an average of around 350 containers were lost at sea every year between 2008 and 2010, excluding disaster situations.

With the dramatic increase in the number of shipping containers lost at sea, this is another reason for shippers to take out cargo insurance.

The P&I Club of the UK is a maritime mutual protection and indemnity organization that actually represents shipowners importing and exporting their goods, not shippers. However, the UK Club said they spend a lot of time on containerized cargo requests.
